About Us

Holy Transfiguration Monastery is a contemplative, Eastern Catholic monastery, part of the worldwide Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church under the leadership of His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk.  Eastern Catholics are Orthodox Catholics who live in full and visible communion with the Holy See of Rome, and we pray for the Pope as our "Holy Ecumenical Hierarch."  One does not need to be ethnically Ukrainian to join our monastery or attend Ukrainian church services.  The Ukrainian Catholic Church comes from the Ukrainian people but it is open for all peoples…so Welcome!

Our brothers and fathers came to the contemplative life from many different backgrounds and histories, but were all called to meet God in silence and stillness, following the advice of St. Seraphim of Sarov, "Aquire inner peace and a thousand souls around you will be saved."

Our Story:

The monastery was originally established in 1972 under the title of "The Monks of Mt. Tabor". Our founder, +Archimandrite Boniface, of blessed memory, was intent of making the focus of this new foundation in Michigan, the LIGHT of Mt. Tabor. That transforming Light of Christ follows Him as the Light and in following they in turn become transfigured IN HIM, with Him and through Him.

It was later, with the encouragement of our Bishop that the monastery would be more properly identified as Holy Transfiguration, perched on a hillside that we still refer to as "Mt. Tabor".
